Russell, Bertrand
   b. 1872, Trellick, Monmouthshire; d.1970
   Philosopher
   Bertrand Russell profoundly influenced British culture in political and philosophical circles. His contributions to philosophy are outstanding in conceptual rigour, range and plenitude. His Principia Mathematica (with A.N.Whitehead, 1910– 13) unsuccessfully attempted to describe meta-language, yet raised puzzles about logical class that still exercise analytic philosophy. Russell increasingly turned from analytic philosophy to political concerns. He stood for parliament, unsuccessfully, before becoming a major public figure from the 1930s onward. He wrote and campaigned for civil rights and pacifist movements (for which he spent six months in prison) and was heavily involved in the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). Latterly he came to represent the conscience of a troubled nation. He was rehabilitated with the award of the OM and a Nobel Prize.
